1956: Juharos Vineyard (Mád, Tokaj region), Szarka Winery
Old Vine Chronicles/III.
1956 is a landmark, heroically tragic year that means so many things to all Hungarians. It was a dramatically historic time when the whole world was watching our country, transfixed on how we were fighting against our long-term oppressors, the behemoth of the Soviet Union. While students took up arms and protested on the streets of Budapest, 220 kilometres away in Mád local winemakers were thinking about the future, making the same moves they had always done for centuries: planting vines for new generations, who would hopefully be free, although ultimately they had to wait decades for that.
